Depending on the customer’s preferences, we use either OPNSense or Fortigate. For more complex site-to-site networks, we prefer Fortigate because it greatly simplifies network management. However, this also depends on the customer’s willingness to bear the resulting procurement costs. In simpler environments, or when budgets are limited, we successfully use OPNSense. Its intuitive interface greatly simplifies operation and, in some cases, can even be managed by the customer.

Fortigate has been a long-standing player in the firewall market and is very popular among many system integrators. Fortinet offers excellent support and regular software updates. Fortinet has a broad product portfolio, ranging from small SOHO firewalls to enterprise firewalls. Another advantage is that complex networks can be managed centrally.

OPNSense is an open-source firewall solution that leaves nothing to be desired. It can be installed on virtually any hardware and enjoys great popularity within the community. This has the advantage that many extensions, such as WireGuard, can be implemented with a single click. Today, hardware is readily available in almost every performance class. This makes it possible to configure extremely powerful firewalls based on OPNSense.
